Name an incident where a command or behavior that you taught your dog has saved his/her life, or saved him/her from injury.
Just asking because Abbyful was asking what is the first thing you teach your dog. And then I thought of how yesterday my dog ran into some barbed wire while we were hiking. Luckily, it was caught on her boot, and had not cut her. But she was panicking and trashing around, and I could see that she could really hurt herself badly if I didn't stop her. And I was 20-30 feet away, over rocky terrain. I had to stop her before I could get to her. I told her to sit, and stay, which she did, as I made my way over to her. Then I was able to get the barbed wire out of her boot, and release her without injury.
What a scary situation! I was proud, however, that even under stress, she followed my commands. Shows how hard work pays off!

"Wait!" saved both of us when I was pregnant. We were on the side of an icy hill and my dog was on a long leash and when he started to chase something the leash tangled around my feet. I yelled wait and he stopped dead in his tracks. If I had fallen and been hurt we would have both been stuck outside that night when temps dropped below zero. We lived in a rural area and my hubby was away and no one would have wondered where we were for a few days.
"leave it" got my second dog to back away from a sick looking animal that was snarling and snapping the air in front of my dog. "leave it" means back away and stand still which is what he did. I wondered if the animal was rabid, but it was never found.
