I finally started backpacking. I need a good lightweight knife or multi-tool. Recommendations?
Ok I am an eagle scout. I know about camping and hiking. My dad was a scoutmaster. He has stepped down and now we and some others want to go for week long trips. I have a Osprey Aether 70, very lightweight about 5 pounds. A 30 Degree bag thats about 4 pounds, and a 5 pound tent. So far weight has been key. Now i believe that a good knife or multi-tool is key fo hiking. I have looked at Leathermans and Gerbers. I want to keep the weight to, at MAX, 6 ounces. Would you recommend a multi-tool or would it be easier to just carry a knife? What would you recommend? i would like to keep it less than $100.
My Golite backpack weighs 14.2 ounces, while the one I made for my wife from a Ray Jardine kit weighs 9 ounces. Our 30 degree sleeping quilts weigh 2 lbs, 5.6 oz and 1 lbs, 8 oz respectively. My total pack weight, solo is 11.4 pounds.
I have a Leatherman Squirt tool with pliers for fishing that weighs 1.9 oz, a Leatherman Micra with scissors that weighs 1.7 oz and a Columbia River KISS knife that weighs 2.5 oz.
I rarely use a knife for anything but food prep and making kindling for a fire. I use the scissors more than the blades so I usually carry the Micra if I go alone and I am not going to fish.
