Hiking The Appalachian Trail

Hiking The Appalachian Trail
Hiking The Appalachian Trail
Where is the first shelter on the Appalachian Trail? - Northbound.?

My dad and I are going camping at Amicalola Falls state park sometime this year and we intend to stay the first night at the state park campground, then drive to the Southern Terminus of the Appalachian Trail, hike to the first shelter spend the night there, and then hike back the next morning. I would be good to know where the first shelter was just so we can know how far we can expect to have to hike. Thanks.

The first shelter is 1.5 miles from Springer and is called Black Gap Shelter. It is located 300 feet west of the trail. Its capacity is 8 hickers. There is no fee. It is maintained by Georgia Appalachian Trail Club.
(see http://www.georgia-atclub.org/ )

For additional shelters northbound on the Trail, please see the link below.

I hope that you and your father enjoy the hike and the camping!
