Hiking Salt Lake City
Want to move to a big city...Portland/Salt Lake City? What are some suggestions?
Somewhere in the western/mid-western US. That has lots of out-doorsy activites (hiking, mountain biking...) I've been looking at Portland and Salt Lake City and Seattle, but I kind of go back and forth...I've never been very decisive. But I DO know that I want to leave Texas and its constant dryness/hotness/ugliness within the next couple of years...
What are your suggestions and why?

And it doesn't have to be a massive city, by the way...just something more than 15000 people (which is where I'm living now...) The main thing is a decent amount of things to do...And quality of life/cost of living/etc.
I've lived in Portland for over 20 years now. I've also lived all over in other places, and traveled quite a bit. Portland is the right place for me, I have no desire to move anyplace else.
What's so great about Portland? You're within a couple hours of the mountains and the coast. There's forest all over, and the scenery is gorgeous. The weather doesn't get too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter. The people are nice, and the city is growing - and it's much nicer living in a growing city than in a shrinking one. We get all the big-city cultural events - concerts, musicals and what-not.
Seattle is a bigger city, and you'll have more access to major league sports there (if that's important to you), but it's also further up north and a bit chillier. Portland averages maybe a week of snow per year, and some years we don't have any. I'm not familiar with Salt Lake City, so someone else will have to weigh in on that town, but in my opinion you really can't go wrong with Portland.
