Hiking Mount Hood
Hiking Mount Hood
Is Mount Hood a good first mountain to climb? If not, what would be better in the Western US?

I've done some hiking and am generally fit. Sometime this year my friends and I would like to take a trip to climb Mount Hood. I've never climbed before, but I'm told you can pretty much walk to the top on some routes, as long as you have crampons and an axe, etc. Obviously I would have plenty of time to get in even better shape for this, but is this an okay first mountain to try, or would that be stupid?

It is a good first climb, there are several non-technical routes. As long as you are in decent shape you'll do fine. It is a bit cold right now, so watch the weather reports if you do it from now till may or june. And on the brightside, if you dont make it, the Timberline lodge is awesome. Also, if you are a skier, there a good slopes (I like one near Government Camp myself).

If you decide against Hood, you can make the drive down to Crater Lake. It is breathtaking there and in the park there are several 7000+Ft peaks that are worth climbing (I highly suggest Union Peak)
