Which composting toilet do you have and would you get it again?

We are looking to purchase a small piece of land and would like to have a compost toilet for when we hike/camp the land with our kids. There are wetlands nearby and we want to have minimal impact on the area. We live in Northern Minnesota, so cold weather functionality is a consideration.

I've never had one (yet) but since it's only for occasional use I'd suggest a simple bucket toilet. Build a wooden box with a hole in the top, put a toilet seat on it (with the spacers taken off so that no air can get between box, seat and lid), put a large bucket underneath. When it gets full empty it into a compost bin (protected so that no-one can mess with it) and add plant matter and food scraps for better composting. I'm pretty sure composting is still effective in cold weather, as it makes its own heat, but there are steps you can take to help it along, such as wrapping it in old carpet/blankets.

Most commercial types of compost toilet are very expensive, require electricity for fans etc., and of course impact the environment in their manufacture.

Scroll down the page below and you'll find lots of good compost-toilet info in pdfs.
