Frame Backpack for Philmont, NM?
I am planning to go to philmont soon (I am a scout) and i would like to find a frame pack to buy. I want something with a size big enough to work for Philmont, and really comfortable to hike with. I have a Gregory z65 for weekend camping trips, and i want something a bit bigger. Also, i want a pack with big enough pockets for one liter nalganes. I think i want in internal frame pack, but am open to your comments. If it is internal, it will have to not get too hot in hot weather. Also, price is not a huge factor here, i want something of good quality. If you have been to philmont, or know someone who has, please tell me what you used, and what you suggest!!! Well I haven't been to Philmont but I worked at a camp where many troops came to do treks to practice for Philmont, and then we were told our trails were tougher than the well worn paths of Philmont...and many of our staff has gone on to work at Philmont.
I`d personally go with Osprey, I really like their frame and suspension systems. Although they can get kind of pricey. Check out the Exos line of their packs.
The REI Flash 65 was rated top mid size backpack by Backpacker Magazine, maybe that's worth looking into.
Gregory is another great brand, are you happy with them? If so maybe you should stick with the pack you have and just look at the gear that is in your pack instead. Mountain Hardwear is also a quality brand but I feel like you are paying for their name.
Your best bet is to write down the features you are looking for- Internal/external frame, external pockets or more streamlined, water bottle pockets or not, what size main compartment you want (either in cubic inches or liters) and then go to your local retailer like EMS, REI, Campmor and ask an employee to help you out.
Dont forget when trying on backpacks dont just try it on empty, load it with some gear or something to give it weight, to see if you can fine tune the pack to your body. Of course you have to break in any gear in order for it to fit just right but its better to test a full pack then an empty pack.
