Looking for the right dining room table? The proper table and chairs can take your dining room to a new level of sophistication and keep your guests talking for days.

In fact if you have the right furniture, it can cover a lot of decorating errors or omissions.

When I say the 'right' dining furniture, I'm not talking about the most expensive. I'm talking about furniture that fits your room and home decor style.

For example, a round glass dining table can give a light, clean, airy feeling that carries throughout your home. A luxuriously carved, dark wood rectangular table can add a feeling of heightened elegance to your home.

So how do you choose the right style of dining room table for your home? Here are a few tips:

#1 Consider the Size of Your Room

There's nothing worse than an oversized table in a smaller room - unless it's an undersized table in a massive room.

The right table should fit the size of the room - with enough space for chairs to pull out and people to walk behind them without being crushed up against the wall.

Many tables also come with a leaf or an option to extend the size for special occasions where you'll be having more guests than normal. Remember to take this into consideration when planning out what size of table you'll need.

Also consider whether you'll be adding in a buffet table or sideboard. That will take up extra space that should be considered when planning as well.

#2 Round, Oval, Square or Rectangular?

You can find tables in many shapes including round, oval, square or rectangular. While this can be a matter of personal preference, if you'll be having eight or more people at your table, you'll want to go with a rectangle or oval. With less people at your table (6 or under) you can get away with a round or even square table.

Square or round tables are usually better for square rooms (where the length and width of the room are similar). Whereas oval or rectangular tables are usually better for rectangular rooms (where the length of the room is much longer than the width of the room.)

Square or circular tables give a more intimate feel whereas rectangular or oval tables can give a more formal, upscale feel.

#3 What Kind of Finish Do You Want?

Tables come in different finishes and materials - which can give a different feel to your dining room. For example, a round maple table with distressed finish can add elegance without being overly formal.

A light ash-finished table with marble finish gives a stylish, rich look to the room.

Keep your floor in mind when choosing the finish and material of your dining room table. For example, a large room with a dark hardwood floor may not fit well with a smaller, circular glass table. You don't have to match the floor to the table however try to at least have them compliment each other.

So those are 3 tips to choosing the right dining room table and chairs. The good news is that with the advent of furniture stores online, you can choose from a much larger selection of dining furniture, find just want you want and even save money in the process.
