Camping Sun Shade
I'm working at a summer camp again this year. How can I stay more hydrated?
I had a number of problems last summer due to the hot conditions and drinking too much caffeine, which eventually led to severe dehydration and (as I believe) a panic attack. Since I'll be out in the sun all day, every day, with little chance for shade, what can I do to keep myself healthy and active?
Everyone seems to be speaking of gatorade but gatorade has been proven by many tests to dehydrate more then hydrate and unless the person drinking it was an elite athlete, gatorade would have no positive effects except for keeping blood sugars up.
If you can carry water do so, if it is a minimal amount do not drink it all at once and sip it. keep your caffeine intake either low or minimal and cut back on sodiums if you can. Foods like garlic also make you thirsty believe it or not.
By keeping refined sugars down i.e. white sugar you might put in coffee or tea can aid in the body using less water.
As people have said though shade is a great way to stop dehydration but you've said shade is limited so hats, sunscreen, breathable clothes etc. Remember though the camp should make sure water is there for you and if your in need if it it is their duty so make sure you put your foot down. If you feel you really need it ask one of the students there for a sip of theirs.
