Camping Guide To Victoria
Camping Guide To Victoria
Driving/camping across Canada?

My boyfriend and I are driving from Ottawa to Victoria, leaving October 1 this year. We plan on doing it in 2 weeks and all on the Canada side of the border. (We're moving, so we want to do it quickly but also see some things along the way.) The name of the game is CHEAP. I have a few questions:

1. Is there a better route than the TransCanada Hwy?
2. Is camping (provincial/national parks) available this time of year? We'll stay in hostels if not.
3. Can anyone recommend a book for this type of trip? (I have the Canada Lonely Planet guide already.)
4. Any other tips, suggestions, stories, etc?

Thanks!!

I drove from the Okanagan Valley of B.C. with 2 under 2 years of age and 1 12yrs. old to New Brunswick and we camped all the way except for 2 nights.Had a great trip, recommend you leave Ottawa after the morning rush hour or before, 5 hours to North Bay where the easiest gas wise and towing is the northern route through Ontario via, Kapuskasing, Hearts to Nipigon where you meet the TCH an hour east of Thunder Bay. Less hills than through Sault Ste. Marie , same distance, easier drive. If you can make it to Thunder bay the first day you are laughing, it will be a long driving day but you need a couple along the way. Day 2 you try for west of Winnipeg, Portage has some campgrounds, 10-12 hour drive max, maybe less. Day 3 you head for Edmonton, 13-14 hour drive through Saskatoon. Day 4 you head for the Rockies and Jasper, where you head west into B.C. and meet the #5 heading for Kamloops. Edmonton to Kamloops is a good 10 hours.Day 5 Connecter to Hope, B.C. ferry by early afternoon, Victoria by supper. Take lots of pictures.
P.S.
Forgot you said first week of October, campgrounds may be scarce, good sleeping bags and 1 or 2 nights in a hotel may still work weather permitting.
