What is the proper attire for hiking?
I've gone hiking before, but it's been a few years. So I was wondering what would be some good clothes and shoes to wear? It will be in Vermont. So the weather is suppose to be partly sunny and low 60's, on the ground at least, up on the mountain it will be a bit colder I imagine. So what would be the best stuff to wear?
Well check out the map of your trail/location. Every 1,000ft you gain the temp will drop 3 degrees. Also take into account windchill, the higher you go the more exposed you`ll be to wind so that's also another factor.
The 40`s to 60`s is perfect hiking weather! You can hike a good pace wearing minimal clothes and you wont sweat. You maybe be chilled when you get out of the car but as soon as you start hiking and hit that first hill your furnace will kick on. A t-shirt and convertible pants along with a good pair of boots and light to medium weight wool socks would work perfect. Keep a fleece or a light windbreaker and a hat easily accessible for when you stop for breaks, this way you dont develop a chill. You wont need anything crazy to stay warm, you just dont want to sweat, if you sweat then your clothes become damp and you get that chill. Also, try and stay away from cotton, cotton holds your sweat so you`ll end up with that chill. Wool and synthetics wick away moisture keeping you warmer.
