Best 2 Man Backpacking Tent?
I'm looking for a lightweight, reasonably priced (if I can find it used all the better) 2 man backpacking tent. Waterproof is an absolute necessity, as is enough room for 2 large adults and 2 big packs. If there is a lightweight 3-man that you'd recommend please do. We are backpacking newbie's and are looking to buy something that is versatile, will be used mostly in summer with some late spring, early fall use. Thanks!
Eureka or Coleman make reasonably priced, reasonable quality tents. You can pay a lot more and may or may not get a higher quality product. With backpacking it's all about the weight, sometimes better quality means a lot more weight and just isn't necessary. I don't mind replacing my tent every few years if it means carrying less weight every time I use it.
You will need a four man tent to have ample room for you and your backpacks. I use 2 man tents and have enough room for myself and my pack. I wouldn't be able to sleep comfortably with my wife in a tent advertised as a 2 person. Most 2 person tents are not much larger than a twin size bed in width.
Unless you want to share a tent, you might want to each carry your own shelter, would probably save some weight. Maybe one person carry a small tent and the other carry a large tarp that can be used in conjunction to create a large sheltered area. I don't carry a tent at all except during mosquito season, I use a tarp for ground cloth or shelter as needed.
