Has anyone used a tarp for backpacking in the rain?
I'm trying to lower my backpack weight for week long trips. I know some backpackers use tarps instead of tents. But I don't know if they would be adequate here in the Pacific Northwest where it can rain hard all day or all night long. I know lots of people on line promote their use, but I want to hear from someone who has actually used one in a good rain storm that lasted a while.
The tarp is pretty good if you set it up in an "A-Frame" fashion. Most tarps designed to cover loads that would be carried in a small pickup truck will do well in the heaviest downpour.
Keep in mind that you will need to allow for flaps at both ends to keep out the majority of the rain. Set your "A-Frame" at a very steep angle if you expect any snow at all.
I have used tarps only in the rain and not the snow. If $$$ is the deciding factor that prevents you from purchasing a good lightweight Backpack Tent, then go for it.
Another advantage, depending on setup, is the possibility of building a small fire at the entrance of the tarp/tent. Emphasis on the word small! The tarp/tent will not have a "floor" so remember you will need to use natural material such as pine boughs to get your sleeping bag off the ground. To prevent having a stream of water flowing through the tarp/tent, dig a ditch around the outside of it to channel the runoff away from you.
Anchor your end posts and sides well! Nothing like having your tent fall on top of you during a good storm!
