Backpacking New Mexico
Backpacking New Mexico

Camping/OHV Santa Fe National Forest, NM?
Headed to northern New Mexico for some camping and light offroading.
Trying to stay fairly close to I-25. Will be coming from Denver and visiting family in Albuquerque afterwards, so northern New Mexico is best.
Looking at the map, it seems Santa Fe National Forest is probably our best bet. I've skied at the Santa Fe ski area, but never explored much.
According to their website, no fees are required for primitive camping.
Question is, are there enough dirt roads out there to find some peace and quite on your own? Is there any light offroading? I have a recovering ACL tear that for the time being keeps me from backpacking.
If that NF doesn't seem like a good option, are there other suggestions? Want to keep the altitude up as we do not like heat.
Justin - Care to expand on your "hmmmm?"
Previous camping nearby Cuba,NM
GREAT hot springs,
elevation 8,000-10,000
fee free
forest service has a office that can provide maps etc.It is located on 1-25 that runs straight thru Cuba.
Atv trails were aplenty.
