Best brand of hiking boots and backpack for backpacking?
Footwear:
If you want something heavy-duty that will last you a long time, then look at boots from Limmer and Danner. There are also heavier duty models made by Merrell (Wilderness), Vasque (Sundowner), and La Sportiva (Makalu)
For lighter-duty I'd look at boots from Asolo and Montrail. These are not full leather, but have very heavy duty nylon as well as leather and synthetic uppers.
If you are talking about ultra-lightweight, then you need to look at hiking shoes. Garmont, Vasque, Salomon, and The North Face all produce very good hiking shoes and trail runners.
Backpacks:
Heavy Duty bombproof stuff...Mystery Ranch, Mountainsmith, and several models of Dana Design; Gregory; and Kelty.
Midrange: Gregory, The North Face; Osprey
Ultralight: Gregory or GoLite.
I'll tell you right now. These are two items you do not want to buy sight unseen. Go to backpacking store and get properly measured for both the boots and pack. Be prepared to pay a little more for the better products. The reason a pair of high end boots costs over $300 is because they last. Same deal with a pack. Speak to the store clerks or shop owner. 99% of the time they know the products very well and have tried most of them.
