Whats the difference between a backcountry and trail backpack?
Kelty's webpage classifies their backpacks under 3 different types of uses: backcountry, light backcountry, and trails. Whats the difference between them, because they all look the same to me. Thanks.
I don't really know what the difference between the Backcountry and the Light Backcountry packs are other than weight of the pack. These both differ from the Trail packs in the fact that the Backcountry packs have a slimmer profile and lack side compartments thus making them easier to use while skiing or bushwacking. I noted that all of the Backcountry packs (even the day-packs) have flat sides. Ths skis could be lashed to the pack much easier than to the Trail styles.
I have a Dana Designs Swiftcurrent (circa 2000) and is similar to the Backcountry Kelty packs in shape. That pack too was designed to haul a set of planks up the mountain and I have used it exactly for that purpose as well as off-trail backpacking.
In general, these style packs keep the mass closer to your centerline so your balance is not as easily thrown off. It is essential in skiiing and in mountaineering when you are travelling over very sketchy terrain and knife-edge routes. The downside is that with the lack of outer compartments, everything usually gets shoved into the main pack, so smaller items easily placed in an outside compartment still have to get packed inside. In my case, I carry a backpack full of other smaller bags in order to stay organized. If I had external pockets I could reduce my need to organize by this means and simply use the outer pockets.
I haven't sold packs in two years, but looking at the website, I got a pretty good idea of what the packs are designed for.
