Planning to buy an around the world plane ticket and backpack?
Can anyone who has done this please indicate a ballpark figure re expenses. About a years travel duration and mostly asia and europe staying in cheap accomodation.

For a longer trip (around a year), you usually need around 10,000 USD.
Europe with cheap acco is 50-70 USD per day, SE Asia is 20-30 USD per day.
Some people manage to get by on 6,000 for 10 months, others need 14,000 for 6 months - it all depends upon your style of travel. Cheap, cheap, cheap or doing the things you want regardless of cost.
The cheapest RTW tickets start at 1,500 USD, the priciest are around 6,000 USD.
Re: Railpass - there are ways to travel in Europe that work out cheaper than Eurail. If you already have an idea what you want to see you can look at all the ways to get cheap from A to B for your destinations. With a bit of planning you can save 10-20 percent compared with the Eurail pass by buying the cheapest individual tickets available (bus, ferry, plane, train).
And cheapest place to stay in Europe is usually on a camping site. If you have a driving licence and travel in summer lease a small car from Peugeot and throw a tent into the trunk. In a pinch you can always drive onto a parking lot and sleep in the backseat or stop roadside and pitch your tent in a field - no cost for acco, which usually is 40-60 % of your daily budget in Europe. If you can't drive, it is also still possible to stay on camping sites - but then you have the inconvenience of carrying the tent in your backpack and using public transport to get to and from the camping site (possible, but recommended only for determined cheapskates). Plus you'll need a really good tent (from 200 USD on) if you do not have a chance to escape a thunderstorm into your car from a leaking tent for 20 USD.
